Fascinating facts about the Western Pygmy-Blue
- At just 12-20 mm across, the western pygmy blue is tiny enough to fit on a fingernail, making it the smallest butterfly in North America. Its copper-brown upperside hides a flash of dull blue at the wing bases, while the underside shows white at the hindwing base and a fringe of mostly white with three tiny black spots near the base.
- Males stake out territories in alkaline deserts and salt marshes, then patrol them for receptive females. After mating, females scatter eggs across every part of the host plant, especially the uppersides of leaves, ensuring the next generation can feed on pigweed, saltbush, and other goosefoot family members.
- The western pygmy blue thrives from the deserts of California to the salt-marshes of western Texas, stretching south through Mexico into Venezuela. It also shows a surprising ability to appear far beyond its core range, occasionally drifting into Arkansas, Nebraska, and Oregon.
- Four subspecies of Brephidium exilis reflect its broad geographic spread. The nominal subspecies lives from Texas through California and into Florida, while B. e. isophthalma occupies the Caribbean islands of Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and the Bahamas. B. e. thompsoni is found only on Grand Cayman, and B. e. yucateca is restricted to the Yucatán Peninsula.
- It now lives in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, eastern Saudi Arabia, and even the Persian Gulf coast up to Kuwait. More recently, it has colonized the Tampa Bay area of Florida.
