• The tropical checkered-skipper occupies a broad stretch of the western Atlantic, beginning in Peninsular Florida and the Gulf Coast of the United States and extending southward through the West Indies, Mexico and Central America to reach Costa Rica. This distribution means the species is present in both temperate US coastal zones and the warmer tropical lowlands further south.
• In 2019 the skipper was reassigned to the genus Burnsius, replacing its earlier classification as Pyrgus oileus. This taxonomic update reflects a recent revision of skipper relationships based on modern studies. The change places the species among a different group of closely related skippers, aligning its scientific name with current understanding of its evolutionary lineage.
• Across southern Texas and Florida the tropical checkered-skipper can produce four to five distinct generations each year, with breeding cycles continuing throughout the calendar year. Adults may be seen at any time.

They munch on Sida rhombifolia, various Malva species, Althaea rosea, Abutilon and members of Malvastrum, all listed as larval food plants.
