• A bison can rotate its massive head 180 degrees side to side while keeping its body still — a hunting predator's nightmare. The American bison uses this extreme range to scan grasslands for wolves and grizzlies while grazing, moving only its neck instead of its 900-kilogram frame. This twist is so pronounced that a bison can see directly behind itself without turning.
• When a bison charges, it hits with the force of a small car. A 900-kilogram bull can accelerate from 0 to 55 kilometres per hour in under 3 seconds and maintain that speed for 1.6 kilometres. A running bison can pivot in place by locking its front legs and swinging its rear end — a 90-degree turn in seconds — making it nearly impossible for a wolf pack to predict its next move.
• Bison once numbered 30 to 60 million across North America. By 1890, fewer than 1,000 remained — hunted from abundant to nearly extinct in just 70 years.
