• In 1930, a handful of Eurasian collared-doves escaped captivity in Turkey. By 1960, they'd crossed the entire continent and reached Britain. By 2000, they'd colonised from Spain to Scandinavia — one of the fastest range expansions of any bird on record. Scientists still debate whether they rode storm systems, hitched on grain shipments, or simply walked their way west, but 70 years to cross a continent is almost incomprehensible for a bird that weighs just 200 grams.
• Their call is so distinctive that British birdwatchers gave it a human name: it sounds like someone saying 'doo-doo-doo' with theatrical emphasis. That three-note coo is specifically a territorial broadcast — the male perches on a telephone wire or roof peak and repeats it up to 50 times a minute for hours on end. Suburban gardens where collared-doves nest can be filled with this sound from dawn until dusk.
• Unlike most doves, collared-doves are aggressive territorial birds. Males will chase other males off a rooftop with the intensity of raptors fighting for kill, slashing with their wings and slamming into branches. This combative nature — paired with their ability to eat almost any grain crop — made them so destructive in some Mediterranean regions that governments funded culls to protect agriculture.
• They breed year-round in temperate regions, not just in spring. A single pair can raise 8 to 10 chicks per year, sometimes nesting in the same tree across multiple seasons. Their crop milk — a nutrient-rich secretion from the lining of their throat — is one of the only foods pigeons and doves produce themselves, letting chicks survive on zero seeds for the first 10 days of life.
• The white half-collar on their neck that gives them their name is visible only on adults. Juveniles lack it entirely, and birdwatchers once thought they were a separate species called the 'half-collared dove'. This disguise works: young doves appear so different that they're sometimes mobbed by their own parents before the adults realise they're offspring, not invaders.
