In 1974, fewer than 50 Eurasian collared doves escaped captivity in Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas. From that tiny founding group the birds moved southward, establishing a population in Florida that soon radiated outward. Today the species is found in almost every U.S. state, extending its range into Mexico as well. This rapid colonisation shows how a modest release can seed a continent-wide presence.
From the Bahamas the dove spread to Florida and now inhabits almost every U.S. state and Mexico. The initial escape in 1974 involved fewer than 50 individuals, yet their adaptability to human-altered habitats allowed swift expansion across the continent. By exploiting garden feeders and grain stores they quickly became a common sight far beyond their original range.
Across Arkansas the dove advanced about 500 km in five years, moving at roughly 100 km per year, which is more than twice the 45 km per year recorded in Europe. This accelerated spread reflects the bird's strong dispersive behaviour once it finds suitable food and nesting sites. The rapid north-south movement in the United States contrasts with its slower European expansion, highlighting regional differences in colonisation speed.
Winter flocks usually number 10 to 50 birds, yet observers have recorded gatherings of up to 10,000 individuals. Such massive congregations highlight the species' gregarious nature.
While three to four broods per year are typical, records show the Eurasian collared dove can raise as many as six broods in a single season. They usually nest within a kilometre of human dwellings, taking advantage of abundant food supplies.
