- The red and white giant flying squirrel can travel as far as four hundred metres in a single glide, letting it move quickly through the forest canopy at night. It achieves this distance by spreading the thin skin membrane that links its wrists and ankles, forming a parachute-like surface. Before launching it briefly bobs and rotates its head to judge the gap, then leaps and opens the patagium, using small wrist and ankle spurs for fine control.
- A single individual of this species was recorded at a weight of four thousand two hundred ninety grams, the heaviest ever measured for any gliding mammal, highlighting the extreme size potential of the taxon. By contrast, most members of the mainland population are considerably lighter, with typical weights well below two kilograms.
- The red and white giant flying squirrel is among the largest flying squirrels, with a body length up to fifty-eight centimetres and a tail length of forty-three to sixty-one point five centimetres. These dimensions are supported by measurements across its range.
- It inhabits forest canopies from low montane levels up to the alpine zone, occupying elevations between 800 m and 3 500 m on the mainland and between 1 200 m and 3 750 m in Taiwan. These altitudinal limits place the squirrel in subtropical, temperate and even alpine forest types across its range. The species is widely distributed and fairly common within this band, which contributes to its IUCN status of least concern.
- The Taiwanese population, designated P. lena, displays a distinctive appearance with a white head, all-dark rufous upperparts and tail, and completely white underparts, setting it apart from mainland forms. Genetic analyses have revealed that these individuals are more closely related to several other giant flying squirrel species than to the Chinese red-and-white taxa.
