• In 1869, French missionary Armand David spotted a squirrel in the mountains near Beijing that nobody else had documented — a species so localised it wouldn't be formally described until decades later. Today Père David's rock squirrel lives only in a handful of fragmented mountain ranges across central China, each population separated by valleys wider than any squirrel can cross. This isolation means a single wildfire or landslide could wipe out an entire regional population with no rescue from neighbouring colonies.
• Most squirrels are either tree-dwellers or ground-dwellers, but Père David's rock squirrel is a specialist of the in-between — it hunts seeds and fruits along rocky cliff faces and boulder fields where no clear competitor exists. Its grip strength and foot anatomy are tuned to steep, fractured stone rather than bark or soil, making it one of the few squirrels that has abandoned the forest canopy entirely.
• At only 280–400 grams, this squirrel is roughly the size of a small Chihuahua, yet it caches seeds in thousands of hidden crevices across its rocky territory — relying on spatial memory rather than scent to find them months later. Each autumn it may create 1,500 to 2,000 individual caches, a cognitive feat that requires brain structures comparable to those found in much larger primates.
• The species has adapted to the extreme cold of high-altitude Chinese winters by growing a winter coat that doubles its apparent size by November, insulating it through temperatures that plunge below minus 15 degrees Celsius. Unlike many temperate squirrels, it does not truly hibernate but instead enters a shallow torpor, waking every few days to raid its seed caches and maintain a core body temperature.
• Père David's rock squirrel may be playing an invisible role in reforestation — the seeds it caches and forgets become seedlings in cliff crevices, colonising rocky terrain where trees otherwise cannot establish.
