• A Cuvier's gazelle can survive for weeks without drinking water, extracting moisture from the sparse desert plants it grazes — a feat possible because its kidneys are among the most efficient in the mammal world, recycling water so thoroughly that its urine becomes nearly solid. In the Atlas Mountains where they live, this adaptation means the difference between life and starvation during droughts that last months.
• At just 17 to 20 kg, Cuvier's gazelles are built like coiled springs: their hind legs are proportionally longer and more muscular than those of any other North African gazelle, allowing them to jump up to 2 metres vertically and accelerate from standing to 60 km/h in three bounds.
