• A Mexican woodrat's 'house' can weigh as much as a small car. These rodents build elaborate middens—towering stick structures up to 2 metres tall—that they defend fiercely across generations. Archaeological evidence shows some of these houses have been occupied continuously for over 4,000 years, making them older than most human settlements in the region.
• Mexican woodrats are compulsive collectors that can't stop gathering.
