About the Swordfish

The swordfish (Xiphias gladius) cuts a striking figure in the world’s oceans, its sleek, round-bodied form ending in a long, flat, sword-like bill that can reach a meter in length. Adults shed all teeth and scales, growing to a common length of about 3 m (10 ft) and, in rare cases, to a record 4.55 m (14 ft 11 in) and 682 kg (1,500 lb). Their range spans tropical and temperate waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, where they roam from the surface to depths of 550 m (1,800 ft) and, on exceptional dives, as deep as 2,878 m (9,442 ft). Preferring water temperatures of 18–22 °C (64–72 °F) yet tolerating 5–27 °C, they migrate seasonally toward cooler waters to feed, often surfacing at night to chase schools of mackerel, herring, lanternfishes, squid and crustaceans. Though the popular image shows them spearing prey, they more commonly slash larger targets with their bill while swallowing smaller ones whole. A remarkable physiological adaptation sets them apart: heater cells beside the eyes raise ocular and brain temperatures 10–15 °C above ambient water, sharpening vision and hunting efficiency in the dim depths. Their solitary nature, often seen alone or in loose pairs, sometimes breaching the surface to dislodge parasites, adds to the mystique of these swift, powerful predators, whose speed, while often exaggerated, still ranks among the ocean’s fastest swimmers.
