About the Barramundi

The barramundi (Lates calcarifer) cuts a striking silhouette in the water, its elongated body sheathed in large, silver ctenoid scales that shift hue with the surrounding light. A slightly oblique mouth, with an upper jaw that extends past the eye, and a serrated preopercular edge give it a formidable look, while a concave dorsal head profile hints at its streamlined agility. Growing up to 1.8 m in length and 60 kg in weight, most individuals are seen between 0.6 and 1.2 m, their bodies compressed for rapid bursts as they hunt along coastal waters, estuaries, lagoons, and rivers that sit within a narrow 26-30 °C temperature window. Though euryhaline, they are stenothermal, moving between fresh and brackish zones to spawn at the monsoon’s onset, where males travel downstream to meet females that release several million eggs into the current. The young, initially planktonic, feed on zooplankton before transitioning to a diet of crustaceans, molluscs, and smaller fish, including occasional cannibalism. A surprising twist in their life history is sequential hermaphroditism: most mature as males, then change sex after at least one spawning season, so the largest specimens are typically females. In captivity this sex change can occur earlier, altering the usual protogynous balance and offering a glimpse into the plasticity of their reproductive strategy, a reminder that even well-known species retain hidden complexities.
