• A suni weighs about 1.2 kilograms — roughly the same as a litre of milk. Despite being the smallest antelope in Africa, males stake territories of up to 2 hectares and defend them ferociously against rivals using their razor-sharp 8-centimetre horns. They mark every metre of boundary with scent glands on their faces, leaving invisible messages that say *this is mine* to any suni who passes through.
• The suni's name comes from a Bantu word meaning 'living stone', and the nickname is earned: they freeze completely when threatened, relying on their russet coat to vanish into dry savanna grass. Their eyes face sideways, giving them almost 270 degrees of vision without turning their head — a lifeline when you're small enough for a martial eagle to carry away.
• Unlike almost every other antelope, suni pairs stay together for life and sleep in the same hidden spot each night. They move so quietly through dense cover that researchers often track them only by the faint hoof-marks left in dust — some territories have been studied for decades with the animals remaining unseen except in camera-trap footage.
• A suni's stomach is divided into four chambers and ferments plant material for up to 36 hours, extracting every ounce of nutrition from coarse leaves and dry grass.
