• Male grivets sport bright blue testicles and red penises — colours that rival any poisonous frog or tropical bird in intensity. These aren't accidents of biology. The colours advertise a male's health, immunity strength, and genetic quality to females, which is why dominant males (who eat better and experience less stress) display the most vivid hues. • Grivets were shipped from Africa to India and South Arabia as temple offerings and prized pets so regularly over the past 500 years that feral populations now thrive thousands of kilometres from their native range. A population of over 1,200 grivets now lives in southern Florida after escaped monkeys colonised mangrove swamps and urban parks in the 1970s — descendants of individuals that may have arrived in the Caribbean on slave ships centuries earlier. These animals are perfectly adapted to life outside Africa, a reminder that a species' range is less about where it belongs and more about where humans allow it to spread.
