• Those ears aren't just for show — they're radiators. An African savanna hare's ears make up 20% of its body surface area and are laced with blood vessels that dump heat directly into the air. On a 40°C savanna day, blood flowing through those ears can cool by up to 10°C before returning to the body. It's the difference between survival and heatstroke when shade is 500 metres away.
• A hare can hit 80 km/h in a straight line, but that's not how it escapes a cheetah. Instead it zigzags in loops as tight as 1 metre across, forcing the predator to overshoot with every turn. The hare's hind legs are positioned further back than a rabbit's, giving it a lower centre of gravity and tighter turning radius — a geometry perfected over millions of years of sprint duels.
• Leverets (baby hares) are born fully furred with their eyes open, ready to run within hours. Unlike rabbits, which are helpless and hidden in burrows, a hare mother leaves her babies scattered across the savanna in separate spots. If a predator finds one, the others stay hidden. She visits only once a day at dusk to nurse — a single 15-minute feeding that must sustain them for 24 hours.
• An African savanna hare can hear a predator from 2 kilometres away. Its ears rotate independently like satellite dishes, pinpointing sound direction by detecting tiny timing differences between left and right. A lion's footfall, a jackal's pant, a hawk's wingbeat — all register as separate signals in the neural map of the savanna around it.
• During the dry season when grasses vanish, hares survive on leaves toxic enough to poison many other mammals. They've evolved a special liver enzyme that breaks down plant poisons that would kill a zebra. Their faeces are eaten a second time — the hare consumes its own droppings to extract nutrients a second time around, squeezing 40% more energy from every meal than most herbivores manage in a single pass.
