• On land, a strawberry hermit crab breathes through modified gills that work like lung tissue — but only if they stay damp. Leave one high and dry for more than a few days and it suffocates, despite having those gills. This is why they're obsessed with moisture: they'll drink seawater through their mouth to top up their gill chambers, a quirk that keeps them tethered to humid tropical forests where the air itself is soup.
• A strawberry hermit crab changes shells 5 to 10 times in its lifetime, and each time it must hunt for the exact right fit — not too loose (predators reach in), not too tight (can't move). They inspect potential homes by climbing inside, measuring the spiral with their antennae, sometimes rejecting 20 shells before finding one that feels right. It's like house-hunting with your entire body on the line.
• The strawberry hermit crab's shell isn't its only armour: its left claw is massive — sometimes twice the size of its right — and it uses it as a door, literally plugging the shell entrance when danger approaches. That giant claw is so heavy it accounts for nearly a quarter of the animal's total weight, a biological investment in a portable fortress.
• These crabs climb coconut palms up to 40 metres high hunting for fallen fruit, seeds, and dead insects — a behaviour so extreme that zoos initially thought captive strawberry hermits were trying to escape when they scaled tank walls.
