• Strawberry hermit crabs grow to about the size of a small matchbox, reaching 80 mm (3.1 in) long and weighing 80 g (2.8 oz). Their bright red-orange hue makes them easy to spot, but the real protection comes from the multicolored gastropod shells they commandeer, turning each shell into a portable water tank and breathing chamber.
• In the wild a strawberry hermit crab can outlive most pets, reaching 25-30 years, but once removed from its shoreline home its lifespan collapses to just 1-4 years and it never reproduces. The dramatic drop reflects the crab's reliance on nightly sea trips for fresh water.
• These crabs act as beach-cleaning powerhouses: their scavenging is so effective that islands with many C. perlatus report far fewer carrion-breeding flies, a direct link between crab abundance and reduced fly populations. Even more striking, they have been seen pinching flesh from the invasive giant African land snail, Achatina fulica.
• Plastic trash is killing strawberry hermit crabs on a massive scale: a recent study estimates that more than half a million individuals die each year trapped in debris on just two remote island groups. On Henderson Island, 38 million pieces of trash entangle an estimated 61 000 crabs annually, while the Cocos Islands host 414 million pieces that claim 508 000 lives. That translates to 239 pieces per square metre on Henderson and 713 on Cocos, with a single container once holding 526 trapped crabs.
• A female strawberry hermit crab can produce between 10 000 and 50 000 eggs per clutch, which she broods inside her borrowed shell before releasing them into the sea. The larvae develop in the plankton before settling on land, where they must quickly find a new shell to survive. Throughout their life the crabs keep a water reserve in their shells, venturing out to the ocean each night to refresh it and balance sea and fresh water.
