• A whale smaller than a school bus filters more food per dive than a blue whale twice its size. Eden's whales lunge-feed in tropical waters at speeds up to 15 km/h, gulping 60 tonnes of water in a single mouthful, then expelling it through baleen plates finer than human hair. Their secret: they hunt in coordinated teams, herding prey into tight balls where krill density explodes — a behaviour their larger cousins abandoned millions of years ago.
• At just 12 metres long, Eden's whale has the most sophisticated mouth geometry in the baleen whale family. Three deep grooves run along their throat — fewer than fin whales but positioned differently — allowing them to expand and contract with surgical precision in shallow tropical waters where a blue whale would beach itself. This design is so efficient that a 20-tonne animal can out-feed species three times heavier in the same patch of ocean.
• Eden's whales migrate between the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and waters off Southeast Asia on routes mapped only in the last 20 years. Photo-ID studies show individual whales returning to the exact same feeding grounds annually, separated by journeys of up to 3,000 km. Yet we still don't know their breeding grounds — a gap that means conservation plans protect their hunting grounds but leave their nurseries invisible.
• They are the only baleen whales regularly sighted in waters warmer than 24°C, a tolerance that made them invisible to 20th-century whale science obsessed with Arctic and Antarctic giants. This tropical specialisation is now their vulnerability: warming oceans are expanding their range northward into shipping lanes off India and Bangladesh, where fatal collisions have doubled in a decade.
• Each Eden's whale produces a distinctive, low-frequency call — a 20-hertz pulse that carries for hundreds of kilometres through warm water. Recent acoustic studies suggest they may form long-term social bonds like humpbacks, yet because they don't migrate to ice-free breeding zones where scientists can study them directly, we know almost nothing about their social lives. They are the most abundant large baleen whales in the Indian Ocean and one of the least understood.
