• A feather star can have anywhere from 5 to 200 arms, each one lined with hair-thin branches called pinnules that comb the water like a feather duster. When a single arm touches food — a speck of plankton or marine snow — that arm curls inward and passes the meal to the mouth at its centre. They're filter feeders that have stayed nearly unchanged for 300 million years, long before dinosaurs walked the Earth.
• Feather stars are the only crinoids that can walk. Using their arms like legs, they crawl across the seafloor at speeds that would make a starfish look rushed. When threatened, they can detach an arm and swim away by flapping their remaining arms in waves — a gymnast's escape that leaves the predator holding a twitching decoy.
• At night, feather stars anchor themselves to rocks with hook-like appendages called cirri, then unfurl their arms into the darkness.
