Fascinating facts about the Steppe Polecat

• A single steppe polecat can destroy at least 200 ground squirrels a year, and in winter it may eliminate up to 1 500 mouse-like rodents, giving it a strong pest-control role. This high killing rate makes the animal economically valuable to former Soviet states, where it is prized for protecting crops and limiting disease-carrying rodents. Its impact on rodent populations is recognised as a key benefit in agricultural regions.
• One exceptionally large steppe polecat from Semirechye measured about 775 mm in body length, far beyond the usual range of 290-562 mm for females and 320-562 mm for males. Such gigantism occurs more often than in the European polecat and is especially common in western Siberia, where hybridisation with Siberian weasels may play a role. These oversized individuals illustrate the species' capacity for unusually large body size.
• The steppe polecat lives a nomadic life, remaining in one area only until its main prey, ground squirrels, are exhausted, after which it moves to new hunting grounds. Because it does not hold sharply defined home ranges, an individual may occupy a site for just a few days or a few months before relocating. This behaviour is especially evident in older polecats that hold stable territories only while ground squirrels are abundant.
• In 2014 the species was documented at 5,050 m above sea level in Upper Mustang, Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal, showing it can inhabit extreme alpine environments. This high-altitude record sits within a vast distribution that extends from Central and Eastern Europe across southern Russia, northern Georgia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to Mongolia and northern and western China.
