• A brush rabbit can stop dead in 60 centimetres — shorter than a human arm span. Their hind legs are built like coiled springs, loaded with fast-twitch muscle fibres that fire in microseconds. When a coyote lunges, the rabbit doesn't outrun it. It pivots, explodes sideways into the chaparral tangle, and vanishes into cover thicker than a human can push through. Speed is worthless in their world; the real skill is vanishing.
• Brush rabbits don't dig burrows — they hide in the thickest shrubs they can find and rely on a coat colour that matches scorched chaparral perfectly. After California wildfires, populations crash not because the fires kill them directly, but because the regrowth is too sparse. Without dense brush cover within 3 metres, they're exposed. In habitats where fire is suppressed for 60+ years, the shrubs grow so tall and open that rabbits abandon them too. They need chaparral in the sweet spot between recently burned and overgrown.

Scientists studying their populations now count these piles instead of chasing the animals themselves. • Brush rabbits have the shortest lifespan of any North American rabbit species. In the wild, most live only 1–2 years; few reach 4. A brush rabbit born in chaparral faces coyotes, bobcats, hawks, and the constant pressure of habitat loss — yet they maintain populations through sheer reproduction. Females can breed year-round, producing litters every 4–6 weeks. They trade longevity for urgency: life is short, so breed fast.
• The brush rabbit is invisible to most wildlife research. Ecologists studying large predators, fire ecology, or chaparral diversity often work in brush rabbit habitat without ever documenting them — they're too small, too secretive, and too hard to count. Only recently have scientists realised that brush rabbits are a keystone prey species: their population trends mirror chaparral health in ways that bigger, easier-to-study animals don't.
