• Their eyes are each the size of their entire brain — and they cannot move them. Instead, spectral tarsiers rotate their heads 180 degrees in either direction to scan the darkness. This nocturnal primate can see prey in light 100 times dimmer than what humans need, making the forest at midnight feel like dusk.
• A spectral tarsier weighs less than a smartphone — around 80 grams — yet can leap 40 times its body length in a single bound. They grip branches with specialized adhesive toe pads and use their tail as a rigid rudder mid-air. To a tarsier, the rainforest canopy is a three-dimensional highway at speeds that would kill most animals their size.
• Their ears are so sensitive they can hear insects moving inside wood from 10 centimetres away. When hunting, they pinpoint a single mosquito in total darkness by sound alone, then execute a precision strike faster than a human blink. This acoustic hunting skill is shared by almost no other primate on Earth.
• Spectral tarsiers announce territories with duets — one mate calls, the other responds in a vocal pattern as complex and personal as a fingerprint. These piercing songs echo through Sulawesi's rainforest at dawn and dusk, audible half a kilometre away. Pairs stay together for life, and their voices are so intertwined that researchers can identify individual couples by their duet.
• Found only on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, spectral tarsiers live in rainforest patches now smaller than they were 30 years ago — their entire wild population is squeezed into about 5 per cent of their original range. They cannot survive in disturbed forest or zoos, making them invisible to most conservation efforts. Without their rainforest, one of Earth's most extreme mammals simply disappears.
