• An orangutan's arm span can stretch 2.3 metres—longer than the height of an average man—yet their legs are so short they rarely walk upright. This isn't a design flaw; it's perfect for life in the canopy, where long arms let them brachiate hand-over-hand through the forest 30 metres above ground, distributing their weight across thinner branches no rope could hold.
• Every night, an orangutan builds a new bed from branches and leaves—roughly 30,000 beds over a lifetime. They don't reuse them, and scientists still don't know why. This behaviour is unique to orangutans and great apes; no other primate does it. Each one is custom-built, suggesting a form of nightly decision-making so complex we've barely begun to understand it.
• Orangutans share 97% of their DNA with humans, but what separates us isn't the genes—it's what they do with them. Young orangutans learn to fish for termites, use leaves as umbrellas, and craft tools by watching their mothers; knowledge passes down through generations like human culture. She raises each baby for six or seven years before weaning, investing more time in fewer offspring than nearly any other species on Earth. This ultra-slow reproduction means the population cannot bounce back quickly; lose 100 orangutans today and you've lost decades of future generations.
• Orangutan intelligence shows up in unexpected ways: they understand water displacement well enough to use a stick to fish leaves from a cup, they recognise their own reflection in mirrors, and they appear to plan for the future—gathering nesting materials before dark, suggesting they think ahead to bedtime. Yet in captivity they sometimes display what looks like depression, sitting motionless for hours, hinting that their minds need something the wild provides that we haven't replicated.
