Speckled Klipfish

Fascinating facts about the Speckled Klipfish

• A speckled klipfish can grow to 12 cm (4.7 in) long and its dorsal fin carries 37–41 spines.
• From Lüderitzbucht in Namibia down to Port Alfred in South Africa, this species lives on subtidal reefs down to 30 m (98 ft) deep and does not venture over sand.
• Each individual has a bright yellow-edged spot on the first three dorsal spines and a similar spot further back.
• In the wild, a rock-pool usually hosts just one male-female pair, and while adults may let a careful observer get close, the juveniles dart away at the first sign of danger, illustrating a life strategy that balances territorial steadiness with rapid escape when vulnerable.
• Unlike most fish that lay eggs, the speckled klipfish gives birth to live young – it is viviparous.
