About the Asian Sheephead Wrasse

The Asian sheephead wrasse, Bodianus reticulatus, dominates the temperate rocky reefs of the Korean Peninsula, China and Japan, including the remote Ogasawara Islands. Growing to a striking 100 cm (39 in) and weighing up to 14.7 kg (32 lb), its bulk-shaped, globiform body is capped by a truncate caudal fin. Adult males develop a bulbous forehead that signals their dominance, while juveniles display stark black markings on their fins that fade to the muted pink-gray hue of mature fish. Their terminal mouth houses hard, tooth-like plates perfectly suited for crushing crustaceans, and they linger in the middle of the water column, snapping up mollusks, crabs, sea urchins and even small fish that drift within reach. Their appetite for sea urchins helps control urchin populations, contributing to healthy marine habitats. A remarkable facet of its biology is sequential hermaphroditism: every individual is born female, and those that attain a critical size may transform into a male, gaining the iconic forehead and a more aggressive demeanor. This sex change, captured on film by BBC Earth near Sado Island, Japan, underscores the species’ dynamic social structure, where a single dominant male often courts multiple smaller females in a polygynous system. Their longevity, up to five decades, allows them to grow slowly, reaching about 40 cm (16 in) by age 15 and maintaining a mature size of 40–60 cm (16–24 in) for the remainder of their lives, a life history that intertwines slow growth with a pivotal ecological role.
