• A southern elephant seal can hold its breath for 2 hours and dive deeper than 2,000 metres — further down than Mount Everest is tall. Their heart rate drops from 60 beats per minute to just 4 when they dive, and their blood shifts oxygen to the brain and heart only, starving their muscles of oxygen for 120 minutes straight. They hunt in absolute darkness, finding squid by touch and electroreception alone.
• The largest males weigh 4 tonnes and carry a massive inflatable snout called a proboscis that they use like a sexual megaphone — inflating it during roars to project their calls across an entire beach and drown out rivals. Females ignore almost every male on shore; only the 4–5% of bulls that can hold a beach territory get to breed, and some successful males father 50 offspring in a single season.
• Southern elephant seals were hunted to just 1,000 individuals by 1850. • Their blubber layer grows to 15 centimetres thick and makes up half their body weight, but it isn't for warmth — it's a floating fuel tank that lets them fast for months on land while breeding and moulting without eating a single meal. A mother arrives pregnant, fasts for 23 days while nursing a pup, then leaves it without teaching it anything; the pup must teach itself to dive, hunt, and survive in open ocean alone.
