Fascinating facts about the Narwhal

• Narwhals are capable of diving to extraordinary depths, reaching as far as 2,370 m beneath the ice, which ranks them among the deepest-diving cetaceans. Such dives can last for up to 25 minutes, allowing them to hunt in the dark water column. They routinely perform these deep forays during their wintering period, often exceeding a dozen dives each day.
• Current estimates place the global narwhal population at about 170,000 individuals, a size that qualifies the species for the IUCN's Least Concern status. Despite this relatively healthy number, the species faces growing threats from climate change, notably the loss of sea-ice habitat that they rely on for breeding and feeding. Human pressures such as pollution and regulated subsistence hunting also add to the challenges they encounter across their Arctic range.
• Narwhals sometimes share their Arctic waters with beluga whales, and the two species are known to interbreed when their ranges overlap. Evidence of a hybrid, dubbed a 'narluga', was uncovered in remains found in West Greenland that displayed traits of both parents. DNA analysis performed in 2019 confirmed the specimen's mixed ancestry, demonstrating that gene flow can occur between these closely related monodontids.
• In late summer narwhals leave the shallow, ice-free bays of Baffin Bay and embark on a southward trek of roughly 1,700 km to reach the wintering waters of the Davis Strait. There they remain through the long Arctic night, staying under thick pack ice until the spring melt opens leads for surfacing. This seasonal migration allows them to exploit the abundant Greenland halibut that congregates along the continental slope of the strait.
