Fascinating facts about the Beluga Whale

• A beluga's neck can swivel 90 degrees in either direction — a flexibility almost no other whale possesses. Most cetaceans have fused neck vertebrae; belugas kept theirs separate, letting them twist to scan for breathing holes in Arctic ice and hunt fish in tight channels. This mobility makes them the contortionists of the whale world.
• At 130 decibels, a beluga produces the loudest clicks and whistles of any marine mammal relative to body size. Their melon — a bulbous forehead filled with specialized fats — focuses sound like a biological megaphone, letting them echolocate prey buried in Arctic sediment from 50 metres away. Scientists call them 'canaries of the sea' because their calls carry for miles underwater, a sonic billboard advertising where food is.
• Belugas spend their entire lives learning new vocalizations from pod mates, accumulating a personal library of calls by age 5–10. They've been recorded imitating ship horns, air bubbles, and even human voices — one captive beluga learned to blow raspberries on command. Unlike most whales, they never stop adding to their repertoire, suggesting a form of culture passed through generations.
• A beluga calf grows inside its mother for 15 months and nurses for 3 years — an extended childhood that looks more like human development than most marine mammals. The mother teaches it to navigate ice-choked waters, recognize specific pods over hundreds of kilometres, and remember seasonal feeding routes. This slow, knowledge-heavy upbringing may explain why belugas are considered one of the smartest cetaceans.
• Half of the world's 80,000 belugas live in the Canadian Arctic, concentrated around Hudson Bay and the Mackenzie River. Some populations migrate 2,000 kilometres between winter and summer grounds, following fish runs as predictably as a commuter. Climate change is breaking that schedule — less sea ice means whales are arriving at feeding grounds to find ice-dependent prey already gone, turning inherited migration maps into death traps.
