Fascinating facts about the Ringed Seal

• Ringed seals keep a breathing hole in ice up to 1.8 m thick using oversized claws on their front flippers. Their claws are more than 2.5 cm wide, allowing them to cut through thick ice that other seals cannot breach. This ability lets the seal remain on ice floes for most of the year, accessing air without leaving its habitat. It is a key adaptation for a species that lives almost entirely on sea-ice.
• The Alaska stock of ringed seals is estimated at about 249,000 individuals and is classified as "least concern" on the IUCN Red List.
• Ringed seals consume a diverse menu of 72 fish and invertebrate species, hunting alone and diving to reach prey. Their diet is dominated by mysids, shrimp, euphausiids, amphipods, other crustaceans, cephalopods, arctic cod, herring, prickleback and sculpin. By feeding on both fish and zooplankton, they link lower trophic levels to larger predators such as polar bears and killer whales. This varied intake supports their year-round energy needs in the Arctic.
• Ringed seals habitually select the biggest ice platforms, favouring floes that exceed 48 m across. These large pieces of sea-ice are usually found where the ice pack is dense, with coverage often above 90 percent, providing a stable surface for the seals. The animals stay on these floes for most of the year and use them as the safe stage for giving birth in late winter to early spring, when pups are born on the ice and remain protected in their mothers' lairs.
• Female ringed seals reach sexual maturity at four years and each spring deliver a single pup after a nine-month gestation, birthing on ice floes or shore-fast ice in March or April. The newborn stays in the mother's lair for about two months, during which it rapidly gains a thick blubber layer before being weaned. This brief, intensive rearing period ensures the pup is well insulated for the harsh Arctic conditions that follow.
