Fascinating facts about the Firefly Squid

• Every night at dusk, millions of firefly squid rise from the ocean floor 600 metres below and flood the surface waters of Japan's Toyama Bay in a phenomenon locals call the 'Hotaru Ikada' — a living constellation so dense that fishers once lit their boats by squid-glow alone. Each squid carries up to 500 photophores (light organs) across its body, producing bioluminescent displays in blue-green that flash in patterns only other firefly squid understand. The light comes from symbiotic bacteria living inside tiny bulbs on their skin, an arrangement so ancient it predates most fish evolution.
• A firefly squid is no longer than your thumb — about 3 centimetres — yet it migrates vertically every single night, the equivalent of a human climbing 20 skyscraper buildings. They ascend 600 metres to feed, descend to breed, then rise again, doing this roughly 1,000 times in their 9-month adult life. This daily commute between zones is the largest animal migration on Earth by total biomass, and it shifts the entire ocean's physics and chemistry each dusk.
• Male firefly squid possess a bizarre sexual strategy called 'sperm-packet implantation': they don't fertilise eggs the way most animals do. Instead, the male attaches sperm packets directly into the female's body cavity, bypassing reproduction altogether — a method so strange it took scientists decades to understand what was actually happening during their spawning aggregations.
• In March and April each year, billions of firefly squid beach themselves intentionally along Japan's coasts during spawning, coating the sand in their bodies. Local fishers harvest hundreds of tonnes, but the squid aren't fleeing predators or lost — they're completing a one-way journey. No firefly squid survives spawning season; after laying eggs, their bodies simply give out. It is a hard deadline written into their genetics.
• The firefly squid's eye is proportionally larger than any other squid's — a tennis-ball-sized eyeball squeezed into a body the size of a grape. This disproportionate organ lets them detect the silhouettes of prey and rivals against the faint moonlight filtering down from 600 metres above, turning the deep ocean's twilight zone into a readable landscape where smaller eyes would see only blackness.
