• A Galápagos sea lion pup learns to dive in less than a week—by day seven, they're already hunting fish 30 metres down. Adult females can hold their breath for 10 minutes and dive to depths of 600 metres, chasing fish in water cold enough to kill most mammals in minutes. Their blubber is thicker than a human hand is long, and a special reflex shuts down blood flow to their flippers and organs during dives, preserving oxygen for the brain and heart alone.
• In 1997, the population collapsed to just 2,000 animals after an El Niño event starved the ocean of fish for two years—a die-off so severe that mothers abandoned pups on beaches.
