• A smoky pocket gopher can dig a tunnel network the size of a football field — all by itself, in soil — using teeth that never stop growing. Its front incisors are so powerful they can bore through clay and rock, and they regrow throughout its entire life, the same way a rodent's teeth must or they'd curl back into the skull and kill the animal. This constant excavation reshapes Central American mountainsides, aerating soil and creating highways for water that other animals depend on.
• Underground, a smoky pocket gopher lives almost entirely alone — except during a brief 2–4 hour window each year when males and females meet to breed. After that single mating, the male leaves and never returns. The female raises 2–4 pups alone in a sealed chamber, nursing them for 30 days before they leave the burrow for good. It's one of nature's shortest and most businesslike relationships.
• The 'pocket' in its name isn't poetic: this gopher has literal external cheek pouches — stretchy fur-lined sacs that open outside its mouth, not inside like human cheeks. It can stuff these pouches with grass and roots, then empty them into a storage chamber in its burrow system. A single pocket gopher can stockpile over 100 kg of plant material, enough food to survive months of mountain weather.
• Smoky pocket gophers appear only in Central America's highlands above 1,500 metres, a patchwork of isolated mountains separated by valleys they cannot cross. Each mountain population is genetically distinct — a gopher from one peak could never survive on the next one 10 km away, even if it could reach it. Climate change is squeezing their mountain-top habitat from below, pushing them higher until there is nowhere left to go.
• This gopher's scientific name, *fumosus*, means 'smoky' — a reference to its dark grey fur, not to the cloud-covered peaks where it lives. Yet it is perfectly named by accident: it operates entirely in the dark, in tunnels below fog-soaked mountain soil, rarely ever seen by humans. For decades, scientists knew so little about its behaviour that basic facts — how long it lives, how many litters it produces — remain unknown, making it one of Central America's least-studied mammals.
