• A blacktail wrasse can change sex mid-life. Most start as females, but if the dominant male dies, the largest female transforms into a male within days—her body rewires her brain chemistry, darkens her colours, and she begins producing sperm instead of eggs. This isn't gradual. It's a full biological reset triggered by social hierarchy.
• At night, blacktail wrasses bury themselves in sand to hide from predators, but they do something almost no other fish manages: they secrete a mucus cocoon around their body first. This slimy sleeping bag masks their scent and makes them harder to detect. They wake at dawn, shake off the mucus, and hunt again.
• These wrasses are obsessive cleaners. They swim up to larger fish—sometimes ones that could swallow them whole—and nibble parasites, dead skin, and algae directly off their bodies. The larger fish hold still like customers at a salon. This cleaning behaviour is so reliable that it's carved out an entire underwater economy on coral reefs.
• Blacktail wrasses live in harems: one dominant male guards 4 to 10 females in a tight territory. When he's not patrolling, they forage together in a tight unit. But the moment a rival male approaches, the harem females dart between coral to confuse the intruder while the resident male charges. They're a team defending home.
• Watch a blacktail wrasse hunt and you'll see a master of acceleration. From a hover they can reach top speed in under half a second—a jolt of power that pins small crustaceans and plankton with nowhere to hide. This explosive sprint is possible because their fin muscles are packed with red fibres built for quick bursts, not endurance. It's brute agility in miniature.
