Skipper Frog

Fascinating facts about the Skipper Frog

• When a disturbance ripples the water’s edge, the frog darts away with a noisy splash, a behavior that earned it the nickname “skipper” because it seems to skitter across the surface. This rapid escape is possible thanks to fully webbed toes that reach the tips of its feet, turning each foot into a paddle.
• Males sport two external vocal sacs that open through paired slits beneath the corners of the mouth.
• The bones in the frog’s fingers grow clear, concentric rings each year, so scientists can count those rings like tree rings to determine the animal’s exact age.
• Its range stretches across a swath of South and Southeast Asia, from southeastern Iran and southern Afghanistan, through Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Bhutan, all the way to western Myanmar, with isolated records in Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.
