Senegal Running Frog

Fascinating facts about the Senegal Running Frog

• A single clutch of Senegal running frogs can contain about 600 eggs, each only 3 mm across, and they hatch in roughly six days – a reminder that even the tiniest amphibian births can involve massive numbers in a blink of an eye.
• Males inflate chocolate-coloured vocal sacs to nearly twice their normal size when calling, a visual cue that amplifies their chorus and shows how much effort these frogs invest to attract mates in crowded African wetlands.
• These frogs can lay eggs at depths ranging from 1 cm to 6 cm, then watch each one sink to the pond bottom while the pair moves on, illustrating a precise, step-by-step reproductive strategy rarely seen in other amphibians.
• In Cameroon, a diet analysis revealed that 36 % of their meals are orthopteran insects, 24 % ants and 10 % spiders, confirming that the species is a true opportunist that doesn’t discriminate by prey size.
• When threatened, they release the peptide Kassinakinin S, which forces predators’ mast cells to dump histamine and cause painful inflammation, a chemical defense that lets the frog buy time for escape.

About the Senegal Running Frog

The Senegal running frog, Kassina senegalensis, is a compact, grey-black amphibian streaked with brown bands and spots that give it a camouflaged, mottled appearance. Its large, protruding eyes sit on a triangular head, and its unwebbed fingers are oddly ordered, first, second, fourth, then third, while the toes remain unwebbed. Adults measure 35–40 mm, with males slightly smaller and boasting chocolate-coloured vocal sacs that balloon nearly twice their size during calls. These frogs inhabit a remarkable range of African landscapes, from the humid savannas of Senegal to the dry grasslands of Ethiopia, and even the montane shrublands up to 2,000 m (1.2 mi). They breed in permanent or semi-permanent water bodies, where males coax females to lay eggs one by one, depositing up to 600 eggs that hatch in about six days. The tadpoles, variable in form, grow to 75 mm before metamorphosing over 50–60 days. Their diet is opportunistic, devouring Orthoptera, ants, and spiders without size bias. A surprising defense lies in their skin secretion of the peptide Kassinakinin S, which triggers histamine release in predators, causing painful inflammation and allowing other toxins to infiltrate the bloodstream, a biochemical shield that underscores their evolutionary ingenuity.
