The silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis) is a large, fast-moving requiem shark found in tropical oceans worldwide. It prefers the warm surface layers of the open ocean, especially along the edges of continental and island shelves where deep-water reefs provide abundant prey. Adults typically measure 2.5 m, with a sleek, metallic gray back and a white belly, and are distinguished by a small first dorsal fin and long, sickle-shaped pectoral fins. Its diet is diverse, ranging from tuna and other bony fishes to squid and crustaceans, and it often herds schools into dense bait balls before striking. Reproduction is viviparous, with females bearing up to 16 pups in reef nurseries before the young migrate to the open sea. This combination of wide distribution, high mobility, and aggressive hunting makes the silky shark a prominent predator in pelagic ecosystems.
