• A sika deer's whistle can hit frequencies a human ear almost can't detect — a piercing alarm call that travels through forest understory faster than a predator can close in. They have at least seven different vocalizations, each one meaning something specific: a sharp bark for danger, a moan for stress, a high-pitched scream when they're caught. This vocal toolkit lets them communicate across dense woodland where sight lines vanish after 20 metres, turning sound into survival.
• Male sika deer grow antlers that can sprout, shed, and regrow in a single year — a biological reset button that costs them about 500 grams of bone mineral each cycle. During the rut (mating season) in September and October, they roar constantly for weeks, a rasping bellow that sounds almost prehistoric and can be heard two kilometres away. This exhausting performance burns so much energy that stags often drop 20 percent of their body weight before winter arrives.
