• A male signal crab waves one oversized claw that can be half his body weight — not to fight, but to court females and warn rivals he owns this patch of mudflat. The larger the wave, the healthier the male. Females watch from burrow entrances and choose mates based on claw size and vigor alone. It's a 24-hour beauty pageant happening in tidal zones across Japan and Korea.
• Signal crabs synchronize their burrow-digging with the lunar tides, excavating new tunnels during spring tides when the ocean retreats furthest. They work at night and seal themselves inside before dawn. This 29-day rhythm isn't learned — it's hardwired into their nervous system, a biological calendar older than any conscious thought.
• When a signal crab loses its signaling claw to a predator or rival, it doesn't just regrow a smaller replacement. The animal rebuilds the claw larger and more muscular than before, sometimes taking 18 months.
