• A red king crab's leg span stretches nearly 2 metres from claw to claw — wider than a full-grown human is tall — yet the animal itself weighs up to 6 kilograms. All that reach is built from a skeleton made of chitin, the same material as insect armour, which means the crab must shed its entire exoskeleton to grow. After moulting, it's soft and defenceless for weeks while the new shell hardens in the cold Bering Sea, a gamble that kills many crabs before they've even finished expanding.
• Male red king crabs migrate across the Bering Sea floor every autumn, gathering in breeding aggregations of thousands of animals stacked on top of each other. A single gathering can blanket the seafloor like a carpet for kilometres. Beneath the ice and in near-freezing water, they wait for females to arrive — a behaviour so predictable that it's driven a 40-billion-dollar-a-year fishery, making this crab one of Earth's most economically valuable wild animals.
• Instead of gills like most crabs, red king crabs breathe through modified swimmerets — leaf-like appendages tucked under their tail that wave constantly to pull oxygen from the water. These aren't just breathing organs; they're also where females attach thousands of sticky eggs during reproduction. A single female can carry up to 100,000 eggs, glued under her body in a writhing green mass for nearly a year before they hatch.
• The Bering Sea's water temperature sits just above freezing, and red king crabs have evolved glucose-based antifreeze proteins in their blood that lower its freezing point below 0°C. This adaptation lets them survive in a habitat where most crustaceans would crystallise solid, but it comes at a metabolic cost — they grow and move slowly compared to warm-water cousins, taking 6 to 7 years to reach commercial size.
• When a red king crab loses a limb to a predator or a fishing trap, it regenerates a replacement over several moults. The new leg is never quite as large or as strong as the original, and each regrowth takes years the crab could have spent eating or reproducing. This is why a crab missing even one major claw becomes evolutionarily disadvantaged — the energy spent rebuilding is energy not spent on survival in one of Earth's most punishing oceans.
