• A Fraser's dolphin's body is squeezed so tightly that its skeleton flexes like a spring — the spine twists, the ribs compress, and the lungs collapse during a dive. They can plunge to 600 metres in less than 10 minutes, then resurface and do it again. Their bones are partially hollow and spongy, and their blood can store three times more oxygen than a human's. The entire body is engineered as a living pressure suit.
• You've probably never heard of them despite there being roughly 350,000 swimming the tropical Pacific right now. Fraser's dolphins stay in the open ocean, far from ships and shores — they're one of the least-known cetaceans on Earth. Scientists only formally described the species in 1956. Even today, we don't know where most populations breed or whether they migrate. They hunt in the dark, silent ocean, leaving almost no trace.
• A Fraser's dolphin clicks up to 1,200 times per second when hunting, then switches to a completely different sound — a creaking, pig-like grunt — when talking to the group. Their echolocation is so refined they can detect a fish the thickness of a pencil from 30 metres away in total darkness. Each click travels 150 metres through water, bounces off prey, and returns to a specialised receptor oil in their forehead that translates echoes into a three-dimensional map.
• They hunt in packs of 100 to 500 dolphins, but the real action happens below. A Fraser's dolphin drives upward through a school of lanternfish at dawn when the fish migrate toward shallower water — a vertical wall of dolphins herding from below like an underwater net. A single group can consume over 10 tonnes of fish and squid in one feeding session. This is one of the ocean's most coordinated hunts, but it happens at the edge of human sight.
• Despite their abundance, Fraser's dolphins face a silent threat: fishing nets catch thousands every year in the waters around the Philippines, Indonesia, and Southeast Asia — often as bycatch in hunts for tuna and squid. The exact numbers are unknown because they die offshore and go uncounted. Unlike dolphins in popular culture, Fraser's dolphins have no conservation champions, no research stations, no global movement defending them. They are among the most numerous dolphins on Earth and among the least protected.
