Fascinating facts about the Humpback Whale

• Adult humpbacks stretch up to 17 m while weighing as much as 40 metric tons. The longest measured male reached 17.4 m (57 ft) and a female hit 18.6 m (61 ft), though such extremes are rare. Their massive flippers, each about one-third of that length, give them the power to maneuver through the ocean's currents.
• When prey are scattered, humpbacks turn to bubble-net feeding, a low-energy hunting tool that corrals fish and krill into a tight cylinder. The whales swim in a shrinking circle, exhaling air to create a column of bubbles, then dive up to 20 m (70 ft) and surge forward with mouths gaping.
