• A siamang's duet call reaches 90 decibels and carries 1.5 kilometres through the rainforest canopy—loud enough to wake a sleeping human. Male and female sing together in perfect sync, their voices locked to each other like a musical lock and key. They perform at dawn, and the duet strengthens the pair bond; couples that sing best together stay together longest. It's one of the few primate marriages built on harmony.
• Siamangs have a throat pouch the size of a grapefruit that inflates during their loudest calls, turning their whole body into a biological amplifier. When the pouch fills, their head becomes a resonance chamber. You can see their entire torso bulge with each syllable. The pouch also helps them swallow food and regulate body temperature—three jobs from one inflatable organ.
• Despite being called monkeys, siamangs are apes, not monkeys—the only apes that walk on two legs through the trees. They're built like acrobats: their arms are 1.5 times longer than their legs, and they can swing from branch to branch with a 1.5-metre arm span, travelling up to 100 metres an hour through the canopy. This makes them the fastest-moving ape on Earth.
• Siamangs eat more leaves than any other ape species—70 per cent of their diet is leaves, not fruit. Most apes favour fruit because it's calorie-dense; siamangs survive on tougher, less nutritious food because their stomachs are dramatically enlarged, like a four-chambered ruminant's. This strategy lets them live in dense rainforest where fruit is scarce, but it also means they need enormous tracts of undisturbed forest to find enough leaves.
• A siamang mother nurses her infant for three years and doesn't breed again until her baby is completely independent—one of the longest childhoods of any primate except humans. The father stays with the family and actively co-parents, and siblings born years apart often travel together as a family unit of 4–6 individuals. This slow reproduction rate means siamang populations recover slowly from habitat loss; a mother raises perhaps five offspring in her entire lifetime.
