• A serval's ears make up nearly a third of its head length — satellite dishes that can rotate independently and pinpoint a mouse squeaking underground from 6 metres away. They hunt by sound alone in tall grass, leaping 2 metres straight up to pounce on prey they've never seen. No cat converts hunts to kills more reliably: they succeed at least 50% of attempts, compared to 25% for lions.

• Born with spots that fade to stripes by adulthood, young servals stay with their mother for a full year — learning the precise stalking, listening, and pouncing techniques needed to hunt in open grassland. This long dependency in a solitary cat is unusual; most wild cats leave their mothers after 6 months. That extra time costs the mother dearly but makes her kittens into specialists that outcompete competitors in their specific hunting niche.
