• A puma can leap 12 metres horizontally and 3.6 metres straight up — the equivalent of jumping onto a two-storey building from a standing start. This explosive power comes from a spine so flexible it can bend into an S-shape mid-sprint, and hind legs packed with fast-twitch muscle fibres that fire in milliseconds. They're ambush hunters, not distance runners, and those legs are engineered for one thing: closing the gap before prey even knows what's happened.
• Pumas are almost entirely silent. They can't roar — their vocal cords lack the flexibility. Instead they chirp like birds, hiss, growl, and scream (a sound like a woman shrieking that has terrified campers for centuries). A mother and kitten communicate with soft mewing calls. In a landscape where sound carries, this near-muteness is a predator's advantage: they hunt in utter quiet while their prey listens for danger elsewhere.
• In southern South America, pumas have become the top predator in ecosystems where they were once secondary hunters. Since large cats like jaguars vanished, pumas expanded their diet downward — hunting everything from mice to guanacos — and their populations rebounded across Patagonia. A single puma's territory can stretch 300 square kilometres. They're now reshaping food webs across a continent, yet many people in South America have never seen one.
• A puma's eyes are fixed in their sockets — they can't roll them like humans. Instead they must turn their entire head to follow movement, making them extraordinarily attuned to the slightest twitch. Their retinas are packed with rod cells for night vision, and they see in colour. At dusk and dawn when their prey is most active, a puma's visual world comes alive in ways ours never will.
• Pumas are the most widely distributed wild mammal in the Western Hemisphere — from the Canadian Rockies to Tierra del Fuego, across 38 countries. Yet they're so cryptic that most people share continents with them and never know. In one study, camera traps in southern Chile recorded pumas passing through grasslands night after night while human residents living metres away remained completely unaware of their presence.
