• At the highest reaches of the Andes, the Pampas cat can still hunt. It lives from sea level up to 5,000 m (16,400 ft), the same altitude where mountaineers set base camps. This extreme range lets the cat exploit grasslands, shrublands and dry forests across a vertical span of up to 5 kilometers, showing its remarkable adaptability to both lowland and high-altitude páramo.
• The Pampas cat is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, a warning that habitat loss could push it closer to extinction. International trade is banned under CITES Appendix II, and hunting was outlawed in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador and Uruguay after 1987.
• Its body measures 46-75 cm (18-30 in) and its bushy tail adds another 23-29 cm (9.1-11.4 in). Weighing on average 3,935 g (about 8.7 lb), it is a little bigger than a domestic cat.
• Rodents dominate the Pampas cat's menu: 92 % of stomach contents in Argentine studies were rodents, especially the common tuco-tuco (Ctenomys maulinus) and olive grass mouse (Abrothrix olivaceus).
