• From sea-level marshes to the thin air of the Andes, Pampas cats occupy a vertical world of up to 5,000 m (16,000 ft). They have been recorded at 4,982 m in northern Peru and even as low as 0 m along coastal Peru, showing a tolerance for both extreme altitude and flat lowlands.
• Rodents dominate the Pampas cat's menu: a 2009 study found 92 % of stomach contents were rodents, with guinea pigs, tuco-tuco and olive grass mice especially prized. Small mammals make up most meals because they are abundant in grasslands, while birds, iguanas (5.3 % of diet) and passerines (2.7 %) are occasional treats.
• The Pampas cat sits on the IUCN's Near Threatened list, a warning that habitat loss could push it toward decline. It is also listed under Appendix II of CITES, banning international trade of its pelts, a protection that took effect after hunting for fur was outlawed in 1987 across its range. These safeguards aim to keep populations stable, but ongoing habitat conversion still threatens the cat's future across Argentina, Brazil, and the Andes.
