• A cat smaller than a house cat hunts across 100,000 square kilometres of Argentine grassland, leaving almost no trace. The pampas cat weighs just 1.5–3 kg but kills prey as large as guinea pigs and armadillos by suffocating them with a bite to the throat — a technique that reveals how predatory efficiency scales down, not just up. Its ears sit high and rotated forward like radar dishes, tuned to the rustle of rodents moving through grass three metres away.
• Most wildcats are crepuscular, but pampas cats are absolute nocturnal extremists: they hunt only between dusk and dawn, spending daylight curled in abandoned armadillo burrows or tall grass.
