• Males span just 3.2-4.4 cm while females reach 3.8-5 cm, making the rosy maple moth the tiniest silk moth in North America. That translates to an average wingspan of 32-55 mm for both sexes. Their diminutive size limits heat retention, forcing them to stay active only on warm nights and shaping their seasonal flight window.
• A single female can dump 150-200 eggs in clusters of 10-40 on the underside of a maple leaf, then abandon them. In the deep south, she may repeat this up to three times a year, laying three broods from March to October in Florida, while northern females manage only one brood between May and August. Occasional population explosions can strip whole trees of foliage.
• After hatching, green-striped caterpillars molt three times: first at 6-11 days, again around day 12, and a third at about day 19. By the final instar they grow to roughly 2 inches long, enough to chew an entire leaf blade. • The moth's range stretches from the southern tip of Florida up through the Canadian Maritimes, hugging temperate deciduous forests and even suburban streets where maples thrive. It favors red, sugar, silver, and box-elder maples, but will also settle on turkey oaks. This close tie to common urban trees explains why you can spot the pink-yellow flash of a rosy maple moth in city parks.
• Temperature drives their numbers: studies show the species peaks at the warmest sites, likely a legacy of its tropical-origin subfamily. Their tiny bodies can't store heat well, so they prefer warm nights and fly mainly during the first third of darkness.
