• With a wingspan ranging from 40 mm to 60 mm, the pale tussock is a modest-sized flyer, yet its males and females look strikingly different. Females display greyish-white forewings dusted with dark lines, while males wear olive-grey wings marked by a darker median area.
• Adults take to the air from April through June, timing their emergence with the spring flush of host trees. Their caterpillars, usually lemon-yellow but sometimes brownish, violet, or blackish-grey, feed on oak, beech, willow, birch, Prunus and Crataegus species, and were once a pest on hop plants in England's home counties.
• First catalogued by Carl Linnaeus in the 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae, the pale tussock moth. Its Dutch name, Meriansborstel, honors the 17th-century painter Maria Sibylla Merian.
• Calliteara pudibunda is a pest of European beech forests (Fagus sylvatica). The moth reacts very sensitively to the presence of even a small proportion of spruce trees mixed into beech stands.
• The pale tussock spans a vast range: Europe, Anatolia, the Caucasus, western Siberia, eastern Transbaikalia, the Amur basin in south-eastern Russia, Korea, China and northern Vietnam.
