• A brimstone butterfly can live for 13 months — longer than any other butterfly in Europe. Most butterflies are dead within weeks. This means a single brimstone born in summer might see two springs, two winters, and navigate three separate seasons of predators, frost, and starvation. They achieve this by entering a hibernation so deep their body temperature drops to match the freezing air around them.
• The male brimstone is nuclear yellow; the female is pale green. For 200 years, scientists thought they were two different species. They weren't separated into the same category until 1758 — and some naturalists argued about it for decades after. The colours aren't decoration: they're camouflage. Males vanish against buttercups and dandelions; females dissolve into spring leaves.
• Brimstone caterpillars eat only buckthorn — one of the pickiest diets in the butterfly world. This means the entire European population depends on a single plant genus. If buckthorn vanishes from a woodland, so do the brimstones. Climate change is shifting buckthorn's range northward faster than the butterflies can follow, leaving some populations stranded in the wrong habitat.
• Adult brimstones don't drink nectar. Instead, they sip fermented fruit, tree sap, and dung — a behaviour called puddling. They're not alone in this, but their long lifespan means they spend months hunting for these rotting food sources rather than flowers. It's a strategy that works in European woodlands, but makes them vulnerable to pesticides that kill the decomposing matter they depend on.
• The brimstone's wings fold vertically when it lands, making it look like a leaf hanging from a twig. When threatened, it simply closes its wings and vanishes — a technique so effective that a resting brimstone can sit unnoticed for hours even if a predator lands nearby. This camouflage is so complete that naturalists had to learn to recognize the leaf-shape silhouette to study them in the field.
