• Once found across Roatan Island's rainforests, this melon-sized rodent now survives in fragments smaller than a city park — fewer than 1,000 individuals remain in the wild. Scientists discovered the species was declining so fast that by 2010 it had vanished from most of the island entirely. Today it clings to protected patches of forest that together barely cover 10 square kilometres. What makes this collapse especially urgent: the agouti is one of the few animals large enough and agile enough to distribute seeds from the island's tallest trees, meaning its extinction would unravel the entire canopy.
• With hind legs built like coiled springs and a spine that moves side-to-side like a whip, the Roatan agouti can leap 2 metres straight up and run at 24 km per hour despite weighing just 3 kilograms. This biomechanics matters: only this exact burst speed and vertical leap lets them escape the boa constrictors and jaguarundis that hunt them through dense understory. Slower by even 10 per cent and they don't clear the vines.
• The Roatan Island agouti was unknown to science until 1928 — 56 years after the island was settled — because it's almost entirely nocturnal and hides in burrow systems that can tunnel 3 metres underground. Locals had lived alongside it for decades without realising it was a species found nowhere else on Earth. It wasn't formally described until specimens reached a museum in the United States, making it one of the world's least-known large mammals.
• Female Roatan agoutis give birth to just one fully-furred, open-eyed baby after a 104-day pregnancy, with breeding occurring only once per year. This reproductive strategy — few offspring, long intervals between births — is why the species crashes so catastrophically when habitat shrinks. Unlike rabbits or rodents that flood an ecosystem with dozens of young, the agouti can only bounce back at 5 to 10 per cent population growth annually, meaning recovery from edge-of-extinction takes decades even with perfect protection.
• The agouti's teeth never stop growing, forcing them to chew constantly on wood, seeds, and tough plant material to file them down — a behaviour called gnawing maintenance that keeps their incisors razor-sharp. Watch one crack open a hardwood nut: their jaw muscles exert pressures equivalent to a dog bite, yet with surgical precision they avoid crushing the kernel inside. This dental treadmill shaped their entire skeleton and behaviour, but it's also why they cannot survive in degraded forests where preferred hard seeds disappear.
