Fascinating facts about the Roatan Island Agouti
- Only about 44 cm (17 in) from head to body, the Roatán Island agouti is the size of a large house mouse on legs, making it noticeably smaller than its mainland cousins. Its orange-brown fur fades to a paler olive on the belly, with a white chin spot and a yellow belly patch, while the ears carry a few dark hairs unlike the naked ears of related species.
- The agouti lives nowhere but Roatán Island, a 48-km-off-shore speck of land in the Caribbean, and even a tiny off-shoot called Fantasy Island just 30 m from Roatán's south shore hosts a separate population. Such strict endemism means the whole species' fate hinges on a single island's fortunes; any loss of habitat or rise in hunting pressure could wipe out every individual.
- On Fantasy Island the agoutis feast on coconuts, hibiscus flowers, almonds and Pentaclethra pods, and like other agoutis they dig holes to cache seeds for later. Yet researchers have never seen them dig burrows, and the absence of such holes suggests the island lacks natural predators. Their habit of hiding food underground still spreads seeds across the forest, making them vital gardeners of Roatán's plant community.
- The IUCN lists the Roatán Island agouti as Endangered because its range is tiny, its forest is shrinking, and people still hunt it. Habitat loss from expanding tourism and direct hunting pressure combine to push the species toward extinction, even though a few individuals survive under hotel decks.
