Fascinating facts about the Quokka

• A quokka's face looks like it's smiling, but that upturned mouth is just the shape of its skull—a flat, broad snout that's optimised for grazing on tough, salt-tolerant plants. This accidental grin has made them Instagram darlings, but the real story is tougher: that jaw shape lets them access vegetation on small islands where food is sparse and often toxic to other herbivores. Evolution carved their skull for survival in one of Earth's harshest island ecosystems, and we read it as friendliness.
• On Rottnest Island, where most quokkas live, there are more quokkas than people—roughly 10,000 marsupials in an area of just 19 square kilometres. During droughts, females can pause their pregnancies, a biological holding pattern called diapause that lets them wait for rain before investing energy in raising a joey. No rain, no reproduction. It's a survival bet that only works on islands where escape is impossible and patience is evolution's best strategy.
• A quokka weighs 2.5 to 5 kilograms—smaller than a housecat—yet produces faeces so nitrogen-rich that it shapes the entire plant community around it. Their dung is fertiliser for the island scrub they depend on, meaning quokkas engineer their own food supply. Remove enough quokkas and the vegetation shifts; let them explode in numbers and they can strip an island bare. They are both gardener and grazer on islands where the balance between those roles decides survival.
• Quokkas have no fear of humans because they evolved on islands with no large predators—until Europeans arrived with foxes and feral cats 200 years ago. That fearlessness, once a neutral trait, became lethal. They cannot run far or climb trees; their defence is freezing or hiding in dense scrub. Today they survive only on two predator-free islands off Western Australia's coast, making the entire wild population dependent on islands small enough to fit inside a city.
• Their closest living relative is the burrowing bettong, separated by roughly 20 million years of evolution—yet quokkas never dig burrows or climb trees, behaviours their ancestors likely used. Instead they shelter in dense vegetation and rocky outcrops, behavioural fossils from an older world. This tells us quokkas are living relics of a time when small marsupials thrived across Australia without fear; their island refuge preserved them, but only as shadows of what their family once could do.
