• Female eastern tiger swallowtails come in two colours — one mimics the poisonous pipevine swallowtail, the other looks like the males. Both females are the same species. This is sexual dimorphism taken to an extreme: it's not just that males and females look different, it's that half the females deliberately wear a disguise that says "I'm toxic, don't eat me," borrowing the reputation of a butterfly they're not even related to.
• Their caterpillars eat tulip tree leaves and nothing else — they're that picky. When threatened, these larvae puff out orange tentacles called osmeterium from behind their head, releasing a stench that smells like rotting fruit. It's their only weapon against predators, so the smell has to be memorable enough to teach a bird a lesson in one encounter.
• A single eastern tiger swallowtail can complete three or four generations in a single summer, yet the final generation each year goes into a sleep state called diapause that can last 7 months. Their bodies literally pause development mid-chrysalis, waiting for day length and temperature cues that spring is coming. It's a bet: emerge too early and starve, emerge too late and miss the flowers.
• Male eastern tiger swallowtails patrol for females in a specific flight pattern called "hilltopping" — they fly to ridges and hilltops where females are more likely to pass through. A single male can cover 3–4 hectares in a day, climbing and diving through the same airspace for hours. It's exhausting work, which is why they only live 2–3 weeks as adults.
• The wing scales that make their stripes aren't pigmented — they're structured. Microscopic ridges on each scale bend and refract light, the same physics behind oil slicks and soap bubbles. Rub a swallowtail's wing and the iridescence vanishes; the structure is destroyed. Their beauty is literally skin-deep, a lesson in why handling butterflies can erase what makes them visible to potential mates.
