• A bagworm moth caterpillar builds a silk case around itself from the moment it hatches — a portable tent stitched from its own silk and leaf fragments, which it enlarges as it grows and never abandons. Even as an adult moth, males carry their childhood home while hunting for mates. Females never leave theirs at all, spending their entire adult life inside the case they built as a larva, mating through a small opening at the bottom.
• Female bagworm moths are born without wings, eyes, or legs — they're essentially a sac of eggs wrapped in silk. Males develop into winged moths with functional eyes and antennae, but females remain grub-like their whole lives, reproducing asexually (without needing a male) by laying up to 1,000 eggs inside their childhood silk case before dying there. It's one of nature's most extreme versions of biological trade-off: females sacrifice mobility for reproductive power.
• The bagworm caterpillar can feed on over 100 species of deciduous trees without dying, from oaks to fruit trees, making it equally at home in wild forests and backyard orchards. When populations spike — which happens unpredictably every few years — a single mature forest can be stripped of leaves by thousands of caterpillars in weeks. Native to North America, this generalist appetite is precisely why gardeners and foresters have long tracked them.
• A bagworm moth's silk is so durable that entomologists routinely find century-old cases intact in museum collections and dried herbarium specimens, still holding their original contents. The caterpillar glues the bag closed with silk after pupating, creating an airproof chamber that allows the adult moth inside to develop without drying out or being invaded by parasites — a survival strategy so effective it barely needs updating.
• Male bagworm moths are drawn to females by pheromones so potent they'll search for a mate inside a sealed bag, finding the female entirely by chemical signal and copulating through a tiny slit while she remains entombed. After mating, the male dies within days. The female then pushes her eggs out through that same opening, which serves as a nursery entrance for the next generation of caterpillars who will crawl out and immediately begin building their own silk homes.
